Leia’s journey to an active life despite hip dysplasia
For Nikolina, animals have always been a great passion, and just over ten years ago the Boxer Leia came to live with her. Last year they were joined by another Boxer, Doris. Before that, she has kept birds, guinea pigs, rabbits, and dogs. The plan had been to compete in obedience or working trials with Leia, but those plans were quickly shelved following some difficult news from the vet.
Nikolina lives in Stockholm and works in sales within the pet industry, which means Leia often gets to come along to work. Leia is a lively and cheerful Boxer who loves joining in on all sorts of adventures. Both Nikolina and Leia enjoy being out in nature, and the forest has become their favourite place. After a day out in the woods together, though, they are equally happy to curl up on the sofa.
When Leia was one year old, an examination revealed that she had severe hip dysplasia with arthritis on one side. Shortly afterwards she began experiencing stiffness after activities that had never previously been a problem. Despite physiotherapy and pain management treatment, the results were not what had been hoped for, and they eventually decided to go ahead with hip surgery.
The operation took place in January 2017 and Leia recovered quickly. Thanks to a hip prosthesis, Leia is now able to live an active life without any significant limitations.
