Happy Paws in the Winter Weather
Winter weather can be tough on dogs’ paws. Cold, snow, slush and road salt can all, in different ways, contribute to dry paw pads that are more prone to irritation and cracking. It is often the dog’s behaviour that first shows that something is not quite right. A dog that starts licking its paws more than usual, walks cautiously or lifts one paw at a time may be trying to relieve discomfort. That is why paws may need a little extra care during the winter months, for a happy dog with light steps and a good temperament.
How to keep paws healthy during winter
Wash and dry the paws after every walk – Rinse the paws in lukewarm water to remove salt and dirt. Dry carefully between the toes, as moisture can contribute to irritation and discomfort. A soft towel works well.
Moisturise the paw pads regularly – A rich paw balm can form a protective layer and help keep the skin soft and supple. Apply it a while before the walk so it has time to absorb properly.
Trim fur between the pads when needed – Long fur between the toes can make it easier for snow to stick. Keeping the area neatly trimmed can reduce the risk of clumps and chafing.
Use boots in harsh conditions – Dog boots or socks can provide support in very cold weather or on salted pavements. It may take some getting used to for the dog, but it can be worthwhile in the long run.
Support body and paws from within
For dogs with sensitive skin or allergic conditions, irritation can become even more noticeable and harder to manage during winter. In such cases, the dietary supplement Humin-Pet may help to ease discomfort. Humin-Pet contains a natural herbal blend that may help relieve various symptoms caused by allergies and hypersensitivity in a gentle way. The supplement should be given daily for at least two weeks to evaluate its effect. The dosage can then be reduced to 2–3 times per week.
